-I have had my sailboat a year now and I can't think of a clever name for it. My past boats were Elation, Gamma-Ray, and Sea-Scamp...only because they came with a name on them. Any suggestions?Sailbad The Sinner is one I liked when I saw it sailing, a few seasons back on the River Waveney, UK.

DO I NEED ANY SORT OF LICENCE TO DRIVE A BOAT THAT IS 14FT IN UK WATERS?
-No you do not. YOU do not, but the boat does! On almost all inland waters boats are taxed for use on the water the way a car is taxed for use on the roads. I live near the Norfolk Broads and i have a little 10' Dinghy with a small 3hp outboard motor on it, the River licence for it is 拢96 plus you have to have 3rd Party Liability insurance which costs me another 拢65. The waterways use licences are annual (though you can often get a 2 week short stay licence) and based on the size of the craft. No you do not. YOU do not, but the boat does! A boat's capacity plate gives the maximum weight and/or number of people the boat can carry safely in certain?
-It is the designer's (Naval Engineer/Architect) calculations for safety of the vessel in most conditions.weather conditions.
keep in mind the limits defined on capacity plates apply in good to moderate weather conditions. In rough waters, keep the weight well below the limit. In ideal weather conditions, it is recommended that you distribute your load evenly, keep weight low, and avoid abrupt changes in distribution. This is especially important if your boat鈥檚 capacity is fully used or if weather conditions deteriorate. It is also important to remember that people represent a "live" load and moving about affects a boat quite differently than static loads. In general, shift human or other weight only after stopping or slowing

It is put there for a reason. You can be prosecuted for exceeding these ratings.

My boat motor wont start cold.?
-When I pull the plugs and put a little gas in the cylinders it starts up fine for the rest of the day. When it sets over night the same thing happens. I already got new plugs, gas tank and a new gas line.If it is an older engine you will need to squeeze the primmer bulb till firm and push the choke in and hold it till it starts and push it in a little to keep it running till it warms up.
On newer you squeeze the blub and if it has a primmer you will want push it in a few times then start.
Is your choke or primmer working? The choke will make a snapping sound when you push the key in.
When all else fails read the manual. You can find them on line or at your library.
the make,Hp and year that will be a help.

How much is my boat worth?
-1976 12 foot aluminum cretsliner with a 1976 johnson 6 horsepower motor and trailerFor that boat and that age the published book values are meaningless. Everything depends on the condition and appearance. Fully restored in like-new condition you might get as much as a few thousand. In typical used condition, but running perfectly figure perhaps $400. If anything needs serious repair or restoration, you'd be lucky to give it away or get $100.
Hello,
I can not tell you the exact amount but the market value of your 1976 12ft aluminum crestliner boat would be around $2000.You can also search on internet and contact the company or persons who deals in used & old Boats. You will get the exact idea about the market value.
http://www.charteryachtdubai.com/yacht-r鈥?/a>
I doubt if you will find your boat and outboard on NADA. (too old)
If the package is in reasonable shape, no leaks, outboard runs OK, and the trailer is roadworthy, expect to get $500 - $750.

How can i find out if my outboard is a Ignision miss fire or kicking out of gear?
-i have a video of it at a lake and i think it is kicking out of gear, but a macanic said it is a ignision miss fire, could some one look at my video and let me know? i say it is the cluch, but, well could anyone here help me? thanks charlie in newark ca.i'd start with pulling the plugs and looking at them. color and amount of deposits, if any, should tell you if both cylinders are firing evenly or not very quickly.
How old do you have to be to get your boaters license in Alberta?

The locations we are considering are Lake Michigan, Florida and the Bahamas.
Since this is going to be sporadic, I am looking for a place to find freelance captains.

Fuel leak issue, 85hp Mercury Outboard?
-Not a mechanic type of person, so I'll try to detail as best I can.
A note here, the engine is an older model. It's on a 1971 hull, but outboard is more likely an after market from sometime in the 80's. I've already had the engine half way taken apart (major outer structure only, no moving parts) to diagnose the issue.
The engine, when hooked up to a gas line, leaks. I've tracked down the leak.. it looks like it's coming out of the cylinders. When the choke is closed, I can visually see the choke flap shutting.. and the leak stops. When the choke is open, it leaks. The suggestion given to me was that something was stuck open? No idea here. So, the question.
I'm handy enough to put things back together after I take them apart.. If I strip down the engine and make sure it's all put back together, will it solve the issue here or is it likely to need parts/more work than a simple rebuild? I already know that it also needs a new starter, but after looking at it I already know I can handle that much. (find it.. a whole different matter)

What type of waterproofing should I put on my boat oars?
-I just sanded down the oars for my boat....Should I just coat them with Polyurethane?
Not sure what was on them to begin with...but it was a clear glossy finish.
ThanksUse a marine quality varnish. Polyurethane is a type of varnish. Just explain at the paint store what you're trying to do and they can recommend the right product.
There is an epoxy base paint and is great on any kind of surfaces including wood and this would be great for your oars because this thing came clear or any color you choose and you can find at Home Depot or Lowe's as well
Just a couple of coats of a good SPAR VARNISH would work quite nicely.

A passenger on a small boat falls overboard. How should this person be pulled back onto the boat?
-a.over the side that is opposite the steering station
b.over the side just forward of the steering station
c.over the stern with the engine turned off
d.over the stern with the engine idling in neutralthe correct answer is C. over the stern with the engine turned off
If someone on your boat falls overboard, you need to immediately:
鈥educe speed and toss the victim a PFD鈥攑referably a throwable type鈥攗nless you know he or she is already wearing a life jacket.
鈥urn your boat around and slowly pull alongside the victim, approaching the victim from downwind or into the current, whichever is stronger.
鈥top the engine. Pull the victim on board over the stern, keeping the weight in the boat balanced, especially in small boats.

Does a pontoon boat have liquid in the pontoon or water?
-my pontoon/party barge has a drainage on each side but it doesnt drain the front is that for a reason? it sounds like theres water in the front ones do they have liquid in them for balance or is it really water that needs drained by drilling holesAs everyone already covered there shouldnt be anything inside of them besides air.
Should only be air. Try tipping or leaning the boat so the water drains out.
They are supposed to be filled with air and nothing else.

Can i paint my boat with house paint?
-Prefix any product at all with any of the 'magic' words: 'marine' or 'yacht', and you can instantly treble the price!
As long as you compare like with like and get an exterior, oil based paint (at least) - polyurethane is better - but not water based, then there is essentially no great difference between marine paints and any others - except price!!
And different producers of course - some are better than others. (Woolworths' 'Cover Plus' wet-look gloss used to be in a league of its own. Utterly superb! But sadly, you can't get it now as they are no more). This product had exceptional 'body', was high-build (a gloss paint, note!), extremely high-gloss and lasted for multiple seasons because of it.
While, in contrast, many top-brand oil based 'marine' brands barely last one season - they are produced in the knowledge that boat owners are very often quite happy to paint (or have painted) their pride and joy every season. And so, are made to be no more resilient than that.
Obviously, I do not include any specialist marine products, for example, the pigmented epoxies and polyurethanes etc. Just like-for-like.
And, bear in mind, high-gloss finishes are much better for the harsh marine exterior environment as these are much less permeable than the 'matt' and 'satin' finishes more usually associated with interior paintwork. In particular domestic interiors. They are also much more reflective and so filter the destructive ultra violet rays of sunlight, rather than absorbing them.
And if you want your paintwork to last, apply lots and lots of coats: at least four primers to bare wood and two or three undercoats. No need to abrade again between coats as long as you apply in ideal, cool, dry conditions and very soon after the previous coat has cured. Simply lightly degrease first.
And just flat back your final undercoat prior to the gloss using about 400 grit.
And ... always apply a wax polish, just like you might do to your car (doesn't have to be 'marine', or 'yacht' etc.) just as soon as your chosen gloss has fully cured. And, again, each season.
-|--)=== NO .... you should not use water based paint on a boat ---- you should use a good quality MARINE paint .... the marine paint will last for several years and it will not peel, crack, or wash off the surfaces -- if you will follow directions and sandpaper all paintable surfaces ...
........... please do not use any house paint on your boat --- when you go to the 25-cent car wash to clean your boat the house paint will peel off and the MESS will be more than you want to deal with .....
Some yachties keel hauled their yacht on a beach in Indonesia, and cleaned the bottom while they waited for some anti-fouling paint to arrive, the sort that is environmentally friendly and slowly leeches away to reveal new chemical. While they were doing this the locals took an interest and revealed what they used for anti-fouling. It seems they get paint from the local shops, the mis-matched free stuff and mix it all together in a drum, the colour is not important. To this they add the hottest ground up chilli and peppers they can find, all growing nearby, to create free anti-foul, and its environmentally safe to boot. One year later they repeat.
No,it is not a good idea to paint a boat with house paint. The house color can damage the base of the boat. You should have to use Marine paint.Marine paint will be good choice,if you want to paint your boat.

Yes, but confine it to the superstructure. Below the waterline, of course, you want bottom paint unless the boat spends most of its time on a trailer.

Why ships creaks when it sinks?
-I hear lot of ships in every movies such as Poseidon and Titanic, when it sinks it will producing metal creaking sound. Why that happen?A ship relies on the load being spread equally over its hull. The center of a ship where cargo is stacked is more strongly braced and reinforced than any other part. This is to resist the torque the bow and stern generate with the rolling motion of waves. When a ship loses buoyancy the hull has taken on water, but in massive amounts. Where previously the hull produced a force acting upwards it now acts as a force downwards, trying to shear metal bulkheads. Every time a wave raises the hull the extra weight of the water on board must be raised too, and its heavy. A room 5m on a side comes in at 125 tonnes or 125,000 kg! Things are going to distort big time.
Trivia; submarines carry torpedoes to sink ships that don't actually hit the ships. They explode under the ship causing a bubble and a fizzing of the water. The ship ends up being supported on its bow and stern and it folds in the middle like a paper sheet. It's weight is used against it.becouse off every thing thats falling off the boat and the preasure of the water u no them big poles that fall down that makes it creak as it breaks the wood and it could be the engin in the boat filled up with water then boom lack off suport
The stress points change... when the boat isn't equally supported...
That puts more stress on the MATERIALS that hold things together.
Wood beams flex and break...
Metal welds break.
pressure simple the deeper you go under water the more pressure there is dip an empty plastic bottle under water and it will start to crush and crack same thing

How can I get a title for my boat?
-I recently bought a boat with no title. Is it possible to get a title for it?You will need to check with your state marine board or department of motor vehicles, whichever handles boat titles in your state. Every state has different laws on this subject, and anything posted on this site may or most likely won't apply to your state.
My state won't accept Bill of Sales as transfer documents because anyone can fill out a Bill of Sale on any vehicle. You must have the title to transfer ownership. In my state, the only way a private individual can create a title is to go through a lien sale company, where you turn the vehicle / boat over to the company, and the lien sale company does the title search in all 50 states to see if the boat is stolen or has a owner on file in some state. They then place a lien against the vehicle / boat for services rendered, and after due notices in the paper, etc. they hold a Sheriff's auction and the sheriff will issue the paper work to the lien sale company which sells the paper work to you for their cost. You can take the sheriffs sale paperwork to the state marine board and get a title.
not all states issue titles for boats, so the first thing to do is to check with your states boating registration dept to verify status of boats. have you tried to register your boat in your name? if you were able to transfer the registration, then your state probably doesn't issue titles.
if you live in a state that does issue titles and requires one to transfer ownership, then you will need to contact the previous owner and discuss with him how he plans to get you the title. usually he will either have to apply for a replacement title. if you have not registered the boat, then the easiest way to transfer the ownership is to arrange to go to the state title transfer office with the previous owner, and have him complete the title replacement and transfer documents while you apply for the registration. this saves a lot of time.
hopes this helps

If you're given the money, would you rather own a luxury submarine, or a luxury yacht?
-Which brand would you go for?I'd get the Phoenix 1000 submarine from ussubmarines.com
Beats owning a bunker :)I'd get a sub. Wanna see the pretty fishies. Lol.

With what do we measure a ships speed?
-Speed is measured is knots (nautical miles per hour)
That is determined by a few different ways. GPS gives a readout of knots made good
An old school way is to use a time /speed/distance calculator also called nautical slide rule. You can get the distance traveled between 2 points (say a couple of buoys) and the time it took to do it. By using those two figures you get the speed of the vessel. Learning how to do this is a great backup to GPS which can go down or the unit can fail. You have received plenty of replies giving you the units used to indicate a ship's speed, which was not your question. What is actually used is a certified timepiece. In the case of a newly constructed ship built in a Clydeside shipyard as an example, before a new owner would agree to take possession of it, it was necessary for the builder to conduct sea trials, and prove the vessel performed to the specifications laid down in the purchase order. These trials were conducted with the vessel steaming at full power over a 13.666 nautical mile (15.736 statute mile) course between the Cloch and Cumbrae Head lighthouses, in a procedure known as Running the Lights. A carefully timed run was made in each direction in close succession to minimise the effect of wind and current. In the case of warships for the Royal Navy, these days built at Scotstown West, they depart for the trial flying the builder's houseflag and RED ENSIGN, and on successful completion of the trials, return for the handing over ceremony and replacement of the RED ENSIGN with the WHITE ENSIGN. This ceremony would not happen if they failed to achieve the contract speed. The speed unit used is usually the Knot, but can be whatever is written into the contract.
GPS
Your GPS unit will tell you not only how many knots or statute MPH you are making, but also whether or not you are on course.
Um mm....you do have a GPS unit aboard, don't you?
EDIT: sorry, I couldn't resist that one.
Nautical miles per hour,
Knots as it is commonly referred to.
knots. one knot equals 1.15 mile per hour.
Knots I believe
knots while sippin your fav beverage ;)

Um mm....you do have a GPS unit aboard, don't you?
EDIT: sorry, I couldn't resist that one.
Nautical miles per hour,
Knots as it is commonly referred to.

I have a boat that has been sitting for 5 years is the engine still good?
-2001 Tracker Deep Boat V-17Umm, well, fire it up, and you'll see...
I have a 1988 Bayliner that has not been run in over 10 years. How can I purge and clean the fuel cell?
-I am certain that there is some serious residue and really bad gas left in the cell. IF I can clean this out then I would consider having the engine repaired.you may be attacking you problem backwards.is it an i/o or outboard?get the engine running on a test tank first, and see if it's even worth fixing.if it's an i/o you may have issues with manifolds/risers,boots/bellows,etc. if it's an outboard the entire fuel system will need to be cleaned, including carbs. if the engine checks out, remove the anti siphon valve at the fuel tank and replace it with a hose barb, then siphon as much fuel out as you can with the bow raised.this will get most of the fuel out.remove the fuel sender and you will be able to get a hose down to the bottom of the tank to get the remaining fuel out.it helps if you jack up one side of the trailer and raise the bow so the fuel will run to one corner of the tank if it's on a trailer.it wouldn't hurt to put 5 gallons of fresh fuel in and repeat the process.check the fuel sender and replace with a new one if needed.install a water separating fuel filter if not already equipped.be careful and have a fire extingusher close by.even 10 year old fuel will blow your a$$ up. don't forget to check the anti siphon valve and replace if needed.

I am buying a retired Navy Minesweeper. Will I need a Captain's license?
-The displacement is rated at 320 tons, but it will be a private vessel. At that size an tonnage, yes, it's considered a commercial vessel and you would need a Captain's license. That is if you are underway. If it's tied to a pier, you will only need it to pass inspection. You can hire a captain and a few crewmen (qualified) to man the ship for any voyage. You should be forewarned these things seldom turn out as you would expect. I'd pass on this good idea, it might not be as good as you hope.
It really depends on HOW YOU PLAN TO USE IT. If you are buying it to convert it into an on the water condo that you can use to run out to your favorite dive spot then you don't need a Merchant Marine license.. but I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you DO spend the $500 with some place like Sea School or Houston Marine to LEARN THE RULES OF THE ROAD and how to operate that beast. You can do a lot of damage with a 320 ton vessel and other boaters WILL expect YOU to be operating it as if you were a commercial operation.. so don't expect any sympathy if you destroy something or someone.
They make a great boat for a luxury live aboard or cruising. The Radio/TV and Broadway personality MIKE NICHOLS (married to Elane May) had one and loved it. You DO know it has a WOOD HULL and the upkeep and general maintenance can and will cost you a blood FORTUNE.. you do know that.. right?
Check With the Coast Guard as if 1 person is paying for anything than Yes U will need a captains Lic.

If a boat sinks when should the engines be drained?
-It depends on how quickly the engine is going to be serviced. It's worse to pull an engine out of the water and leave it sit than to leave it submerged. Because the metal surfaces inside the engine will start corroding very quickly if they're exposed to air. Pull it out of the water and get started on tearing it down right away. If you leave it sit for more than a few hours it'll be ruined.Immediately upon salvage. The sooner you get the water out of the engine and a fresh coat of oil on everything, the sooner you stop the water damage inside.
ASAP after pulling out of the water.

Do they make a adaptor to put a load on the prop of a outboard motor with a garden hose?
-i have a 35 hp Johnson and i saw some years ago at a boat dealer that was runing a outboard motor and there was somthing on the lower unit that put a load on the prop to see how it preformed at high speeds, can i get one of these with out haveing to sell my house? The CHEAPEST way to do what you want to do is, get an empty 55 gallon drum and boat a wooden plate on the top to give the clamps something to bolt onto..mount the mount the motor to that board.. fill the 55 gallon drum with water and start up the motor.... you can safely run the outboard in that setup and it won't cost you a Fortune for a dynamometer for a one time use.
If all you want to do is confirm the engine is running properly throughout it's RPM range then it's just as easy to use a big trashcan or 55 gallon drum full of water. Something that attached to the propshaft and imitated an actual load seems like it'd be pretty complex, not to mention rather dangerous.
they make actual dynos for boats. remove the prop and put the correct adapter on and put it in place of the prop.
definetly isnt a cheap tool.
but, just put it in the water. if it runs like crap, you will know it.

90 hp Merc 2-stroke fuel pump delivering no gas to carbs but plenty to pulse hose fitting. Why?
-The fuel pump is rebuilt ( to specs, used mercury manual) and fuel flows through the pump but does not make it up into the first carburetor. Instead the fuel flows through the pulse hose into the powerhead fitting and down and out the third (bottom) carburetor. This is a serious flow of fuel which impedes the flow of ANY fuel to the carb linkage. If i block the pulse hose fuel makes it to the first carb. Is there a check valve or something connected with the pulse hose that could have blown out allowing large amounts of fuel to flow in to the powerhead fitting? It just seems as if something is missing since you can pump the ball as many times as you want and fuel just pumps through the powerhead into the 3 carb. Thanks For Your Help.
My boat propeller smoked?
-is it normal for the propeller to smoke a little while driving and after drivingThru hub exhaust? Then yes they will smoke a little.
Where is the Thermostat located on a 1975 25hp Evinrude?
-I wanted to change the thermostat on my 1975 25hp Evinrude but i was unsure of where the thermostat is located. I was also wondering if it is an easy task to do.I didn't think outboard motors had thermostats ???
I have a kawasaki jet ski 750 that will not crank unless you spray gas in carbs.. any ideas?
-it will run when i get it cranked as long as i am giving it throttle. When i let off of throttle to idle it dies.well, it obviously sounds like its not getting enough fuel, so i'd start there. possibly the carb is gunked up, idle is out of adjustment, fuel filter clogged up, is there a fuel pump - probably not, but check if fuel lines are clean, air intake is clean and air filter.
What are some techniques to making a (good) milk carton boat?
-I have to make a boat out of a carton that is powered by wind for a contest. what are some good techniques? like how should i cut it? should it be weighted? how should i do the sails? basically, what's the best way to make it go the fastest and win? thanks! any information is appreciated. i have never done this before!
What would you use for a ships hull? metal or non-metal?
-hw emergency! help!
plz rply asap guys!For ships there really is no alternative, metal. For Yachts though;
Under 36 ft, fiberglass for preference. Over that metal starts to look good for its strength and its extra weight is not so important. Its also nicer to hit a reef with a metal hull and take a dent, rather than rip a hole as you would with f.glass.
Aluminium is nice if you can afford it, but does require knowledge of Alu+ welding for repair.
Wood is out of fashion now for maintenance reasons.
Balsa core with f.glass offers more strength for less weight.
Carbon fibre is stiffer than f.glass but expensive requiring special skills.
Steel.
for smaller ones, fiberglass or aluminum.

Should I climb my mast?
-I have a Hurley 22ft sailing yacht and have just acquired a proper VHF with mast top ariel. The boat is currently on dry land but will be launched next week.
Should I climb the mast (with bosun's chair of course) with the boat on dry land OR should I wait till it's launched and do it on the water for a softer landing should I fall, (but I am worried about the effect I will have on the boats balance if I am up there).
OR should I try to step the mast. The problem with stepping the mast is that I have no clue how to do it, and looking on the internet they say it requires a crane do so. Therefor this is least preferable but possibly the safest.
What to do?lower you mast.
the hurley 22 has a deck stepped mast that has a tabernackle mast step. lowering the mast should be a simple process. complete instructions as listed on the hurley owners web site below. it will be better to lower the mast in the water in a slip.

Or...If the boat has a retractable keel, retract the keel, get a bunch of people to lean the boat over and stand on a few tables to reach the top of the mast on the shore
Probably the easiest way is to just put it lower down; I don't think VHF needs to be at the top of the mast.
Here's a good write-up: http://www.saltyjohn.co.uk/resources/Mar鈥?/a>
Or you could mount it in a lower position. My marina has a bucket they put on the forklift for doing things like that. Man gets in the bucket and they pick him up.
First of all call your boat whatever you wish irregardless of it's size. The origin of the word yacht is a much debated thing but it is generally accepted to be a vessel not used in conducting commerce so a 100 foot sailing vessel used for charter is not a yacht but yours could be. As for your problem why not find some relatively high point and get a rope around your mast up over the spreaders and drop your fenders. Then use the rope to heel the boat and grant you access to the mast head. Even if you have to tie the end to a hitch on your car to pull it down a little. Use some caution and take your time and it'll be fine.
First of all a 22 foot TOY BOAT is NOT A YACHT.. a 22 foot TOY would barely be big enough to serve as a good DINGHY for a YACHT.. so don't go around telling people you have a 22 foot YACHT if you want them to take you seriously.
If the mast is not stepped.. then WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? you just mount the antenna and run the lines with the mast laying down.. so I don't understand what you are talking about.
Depending on the boat yard, many TRAVEL LIFT'S have a small crane on them that is used to step a mast.. but if you have any kind of tabercle at all, you can step the mast for a 22 foot TOY BOAT with just 2 people an some 2x4 lumber in the form of an "X".. somehting that any YACHT OWNER should be able to do.
Some years ago I had an 18 foot Laguna that is stepped and unstepped the mast SINGLEHANDED with norhting more than a light wench and a bit of rigging knowledge... but then.. it was only 18 foot long so it was not a "YACHT".. snicker, snicker, snicker.

Should my outboard make steam?
-1983 Evinrude 25 horse. Bought it in non-running condition. I replaced a blown head gasket, and replaced the impellor, impellor housing, and gaskets. I ran the motor (without a prop, in neutral) in a tub of water. There were 3 places where water came out:
1. a rubber overflow tube under the gear shift know. it was room temp water.
2. the discharge port at the rear of the engine. it was pretty warm.
3. there were 2 holes at the front bottom of the middle unit. water came out here.
I never saw steam when running it in the tub.
Yesterday I was able to put the boat in a small pond. It's about the size of 2 tennis courts. There were alot of weeds, and I had to stop the motor a few times to clear the prop and push myself away from the bank. When I restarted the motor in the water, it would take a few seconds and I would see steam come out the 2 hot water discharge ports in the back. After a few seconds, I would see water spraying out along with some steam. Also, the water coming from the rubber overflow tube would be warm when steam was coming out the other port. Once there was a good flow of water coming from the hot water discharge port, the water coming from the rubber overflow tube would be the same temp as the pond.
I could not give it more than 1/4 or 1/3 throttle for more than 2 or 3 seconds because I would hit the bank.
Is the motors cooling system operating normally for the way I was running it?

Is Briggs & Stratton a Quality Generator or should I buy Yamaha ?
-I'm going on a long RV trip and I need a really decent generator. That being said I am on a budget so I want to know should I go with Briggs & Stratton or pay up more for a Yamaha type brand .. please let me know.B&S makes an awesome engine and the only brand I will buy.
Yamaha and Honda make garbage, and I have had nothing but trouble as the equipment ages.
Look at the DB rating for noise and then make your choice. BS have been around for a long time and parts are everywhere.

Amphibious vehicle that's more boat than car, yet can get across public roads. Does this exist?
-I have long term plans to move to Mexico, DMV laws are lax there. Just wondering if theirs anything that can get across a public road, yet is a full fledged boat when you get it in the water. Sea legs isn't doing it for me.They exist, but they aren't very good. It was a better car, and not much of a boat. It would only be good in calm waters.Sure they do.. they have only been around for maybe 40 YEARS or so now. A couple of them were even sold on BARRET JACKSON AUCTION about a year ago.. for about $40,000 EACH if I remember correctly.. how many do you want to buy?

Why should I have a boat and a sea doo?
-I already have a sea doo boat.
but really want a sea doo pwc
what is some justification should i buy it
why
i really want tooif you can actually afford it, wanting it is enough.
there isnt any REAL justification to owning either a PWC or a boat of any type, unless that is how you make a living.
they are TOYS, plain and simply.
even my boat which is primarily used for fishing and does put food on my table, even if gas was free, it doesnt provide a living. just a lot of fun and some fresh fish dinners.
personally, i'd question if the sea doo boat is nessacry if you have a PWC, or vice versa. a PWC and a good ski boat or fishing boat, two things with two very different things they are best at.
but a sea doo boat and a sea doo PWC, two of the same in different sizes.

How much should it cost to replace an exhaust manifold on a mercruiser 4.3?
-I have a 1992 Mercruiser 4.3. I cracked the exhaust manifold pretty good this year. Probably bad winterization. Wondering if it is a quick fix or if I should have it done? Also, if I have it done approx. how much should it cost?ALOT
I have a 1996 nitro bass boat . it will not plane out unless someone is in front what is the best prop to fix?
-Are you trimming the motor in all the way when you take off? That could fix the whole problem. Changing the prop probably wouldn't fix the issue.you need to drop an inch or two in the pitch of the prop.you probably won't loose much,if any speed as the engine will be operating closer to the max rpm. if your prop is in good shape, a good prop shop should be able to fix the problem.be sure to note the rpm that the engine is running at wot and relay that to the prop shop.another option is to buy an adjusable composite prop, and fine tune it to find out what you need, and keep it for a spare. get the extra hardware(thrust washer, etc.) and the tools to change it and keep them onboard.
A prop will help by putting a lower pitch prop on but you will loose top speed. can you move some weigh around? I have seen boats with bird shot or some kind of weigh in the bow.I would move weigh be for a prop.
I assume it is trimmed right on plane.Adding power trim will fix it too it is big bucks

Can I keep something I found in the river in PA?
-I found a buoy floating down the river and I wanted to know if anyone knows whether I can keep it. They are worth $200+ and I was going to use it at my boat dock, I am not sure who it belongs too. The way I look at it is that I helped clean up the river a little, but I am not sure if in PA whether or not I have to report it to the police or not.I second the idea that if it's a navigation marker you shouldn't keep it. They're typically red, green or the numbered speed limit kind. Private mooring buoys are typically round or cone-shaped and typically painted white (usually with a name on them).
You'd probably be best served asking the local police force that covers that body of water. If it's an official marker they can handle it. And likely be able to tell you if it isn't. Like a lot of found property there may be a waiting period for claiming it. The cops hold onto it for a while (typically 90 days) and if nobody claims it in that time it's usually returned to you.
Think about how you'd want someone else to handle returning your buoy if YOU lost it.If it is a marker buoy of any type, you should report it to the marine police. If it's a mooring buoy, of the type used to moor boats, I'd say keep it.

Beat paying companys for merchant marine ?
-That all depends on your RATING.. What TONNAGE LEVEL and what LIMITS of Captain's license do you have and what endorsements do you have? There is a huge difference in pay and benefits and it all depends on YOU and WHAT YOU CAN DO.There are a lot different companies. It all depends on the contract. Some ships in the same company pay different. The O.T. on the ship is always taken into account. Some ships give all the O.T. you can work, while others don't give any. It also depends on if the ship in union or non-union. Non-union ships pay better, but the benefits are not there. If you go union some unions are better than others. Good luck
Can you be 16 and operate a jetski without a lisence?

Where can I go camping 3-4 hours away from L.A that also has a lake. Not looking to bring a boat or anything..?
-I want a place that has a lake for family activities surrounded by pine trees. It's ok if the lake is not directly on the camp site im willing to drive a little bit to get to it. Thank you YAHOO people!Theres 2 places I visited during a vacation to the coachella valley in the San jacinto mountains. we went up to the town Idylwild in the mountain and came across a rather large lake, lake hemet, its a lovely looking place where they rent speedboats and other things like that. just along from that is another smaller lake called lake fulmor. It is an amazing idyllic setting surrounded by pine trees and has its own huge rock which people tombstone off. It looked great fun, and also has bbq and toilet facilities there. In between the 2 theres are few different places to camp and of course the small mountain town of Idyllwild. The san jacinto mountain are easliy accessible from palm desert, which is about 3 hours or so down the 10. I would suggest visiting the mountains in the summer when its a warm comfortable temperature up there, since in the winter there can be at least 3ft of snow.
heres a website that will give you some more info on the area and a map showing the locations of the places i've mentioned..... http://www.idyllwild.com/camping.html.
if you do go i hope you enjoy your visit just as i did. :-)
arrowhead, i've been there before, nice place.
as a fellow californian, you couldnt live in a better state for outdoors activities. ocean, lakes, snow, desert, forests, we got it all. and within an easy days drive no matter where in cali you are.

Can a 2000 S10 V6 pull a 20 ft boat.?
-I have a 20 ft boat that weighs about 2100 lbs with an outboard that weighs about 500. I was looking at a 2000 S10 V6 and wanted to know if it could handle the load. It's right on the limit of what I would use to pull that size boat. For short distances on level ground maybe. But, pulling that size boat up a launch ramp, i think you are asking for trouble. I'd go with a full size van with a V-8. Add the weight of your trailer to the above numbers and gear like coolers, and fuel, and your load is more like 3200 pounds. (heaver if you have a 2 axle trailer (required in some states.) .

Hope it helps.

If i am making a bill of sale for a boat what if i dont know who the boat was previously registered to?
-how can the person i am selling the boat to register it?If you are making a bill of sale than the owner of boat might be yourself. But if you don't know who is the owner of the boat than you can check the title of the boat with the state concerned boat authority who has the record of registration.
If you are not the owner you can not sale your boat because it is illegal.

Ways to charge a trolling motor battery?
-I am using a deep cycle 12v marine battery for my trolling motor. My boat is docked all summer and never comes out of the water. I am looking for a way to keep my battery charged (already tried solar) so that I dont have to lug it out of the boat and take it home every few days. Is there some sort of portable device that can transfer power?buy a battery charger.

What Prop goes where?
-We took the props off of our 2 outboards on our boat for the winter. Apparently it matters which prop goes on each engine. How could we tell witch one goes where?

What is a hub on a boat motor?
-My 15hp outboard moves at slower speeds, but when you throttle up it doesnt move. Boat shop said it could be the hub????in your case, its probably just rubber in between the part of the prop that mates with the shaft and the prop itself.
some models, like mercury with its larger props, have a square plastic hub that goes inside the prop. its not unheard of for them to break with no sign of the prop hitting anything. those take about 5 minutes to replace and cost about $30.
BTW, i'd suggest a spare prop, kept in either the boat or tow vehicle, and a spare hub if its quickly changeable.
if you have a spare prop, a minor accident or a tired prop that just fails (should of been taken to a prop shop already) doesnt end the day. its like having a spare tire for your car.
The thing the prop goes onto. They can slip when they're stripped.

Can a 1998 Mazda 626 tow a 14 foot Jon Boat?
-The car has 140 HP and is a standard (stickshift) transmission. The boat weighs about 400 lbs including all of the gear/motoraccording to all of the reviews on the 1998 mazda 626, it is not recommended that you use this vehicle to tow with. there is no tow rating established for this car.

Living on a Sailboat?
-I'm curious about living on a sailboat. Does anyone here know people who live on one or actually live on one themselves? I'm only asking because it seems like a pretty inexpensive lifestyle once you've got the sailboat ready for full operation. I've never sailed, but have always wanted to. I think it would be a great lifestyle. What do you think? I will most likely be living in Hawaii (Thats the plan right now) and traveling to Charleston, SC and also Malaysia. So I know I'll need to learn a lot before making those trips, mainly the Malaysia trip. I've read that sailboats are usually cheaper in Hawaii so I would probably buy it there, if I do.
Experiences living on a sailboat?
Suggestions for buying the right boat for sailing to other countries roomy enough for 2 to live in?
Advice on what to stay away from in regards to types of sailboats?
How big of a sailboat should we get that can be managed by one person if needed?
How much do you think it would cost to get fully operational and ready to live on and be ready for long distance sailing?
For the international sailing, would I need a Captains License?
Do I need a Captains License period? If so, how hard is that and how long does it take?
You don't have to answer all the questions, just the ones you can. ThanksA lot of questions and none that are easily answered. First make some short trips...especially into rough water because inevitably you'll meet some while cruising. Many people assume they are sailors but end up sick or bored after investing a great deal of time and money. Not every one is a long distance sailor. My preference is for short legs near home. The price as dictated by the boat varies so much that it is once more very difficult to answer. A friend of mine well versed in blue water sailing...15 trips across the Atlantic, many solo as well as all of the south Pacific, just bought a 1981 Niagara 35 which is as good as it gets out there for a reasonable $38k Canadian. Took about 10k extra to get her ready to sail home but she's very much capable of all that you would need. There's a great deal of disagreement on the best boats but there are many out there that cost much less than 100k. Here in Canada we have seen more than our share of good cruising boats that predate the 80's. Check out some of the ones built in Ontario and Quebec as well as Nova Scotia. Look for carrying capacity..water and fuel not a good cockpit for lounging because they won't help save your hide between ports. I don't think you need any form of ticket...sure don't here in Canada as long as it's classed as a yacht below a given tonnage.
I live on a 52 ft Jeanneau and I have cruised Mexico with my family for just about a year. It has been great and we have had a lot of fun. There will probably be more boats to pick from if your on the mainland. I can answer most of you questions for you so here it is
Question1...living on a sailboat is a large lifestyle change but i think it is for the better. You are truly free and can go many places people without a boat can't. If you will be doing a crossing make sure you watch the weather which is the main thing. Today my dad and i saved a 43 ft twin engine trawler in Cabo san Lucas Mexico which was a cool experience. You will find you will have many cool experiences though cruising.
Question2...look for something where most of the sails can be controlled in the cockpit for single handed sailing. Sloop or cutter rig is good. Depending on what your looking for full or thin keel is fine. Stay away from fake wood in the interior. Get a boat that will also sail well also. Center cockpit boats are good but don't offer as much space in the cockpit. For lounging aft cockpit is better and larger.
Question3...Hunter is horrible, any Beneteau yr. 2005 and up, catalinas are okay, the newer Jeannea because Beneteau has taken them over recently, nothing 2007 and up..mine is very nice, most things that are 1980s and down are a lot of work to fix up so if you want to buy a boat and go stay up from around the yr 85
Question4...35 to 45 ft very comfortable for two people
Question5...from 100,000+ dollars
Question6...NO
Question7...NO just make sure you are educated about cruising and know your boat. Also take some time practicing and doing little trips around the islands if you buy a boat there. If you are on the mainland make little week trips where ever you are and practice with your boat.
I recommend going into a sailing school which will teach you many things about sailing.
Also it will be hard to find a marina slip in Hawaii. search for boats to buy on www.yachtworld.com

How many people is limit to ride in a boat is there any law for it?
-Here is the formula that determines the Maximum amount of people based on a 150 lb person.
length x width divided by 15, round down. Again this is the max amount and does not take into account weather etc. You must have a pfd for all on board and a throwable device.
You can also have your voyage canceled until you correct the situation.Bigger is not the key. Modern boats will have a nameplate (usually on the stern), indicating the maximum number of passengers and weight of payload (including passengers. If stopped by the locals or the Coast Guard, they will look to that spec to determine if you are overloaded.
Irregardless of that, or if there is no plate, then they can stop you if the boat is obviously overloaded and appears unsafe.
If a boat is used to carrying paying passengers (which can even mean that they 'chipped in' to cover the gas, then the captain must have a Coast Guard Issued license and the maximum number of passengers is strictly limited to 6 - unless the vessel is 'inspected' as a commercial vessel and the maximum passenger limit is specified on the inspection certificate.
There is a difference between legally and safely. It doesn't even say which country you live in, so it's impossible to say whether there is a law.
But as master of the boat you must be able to determine how many you can carry safely, and that depends on the boat, the water, and your own skills. This is something you need to learn before you can leave the dock.
Every boat must have a plate somewhere - usually at the back where the motor is. It tells you how many people can legally get in your boat.
USA ? should be a US Coast guard plate on the boat. it tells how many persons can be on board.
a baby or a small child counts the same as an adult. ...small fishing boats.not labeled,...use common sense
It depends on the boat. The bigger the boat, the more people it can hold.

Why won't my 1980 70hp Evinrude Shift into Forward or Reverse ?
-Today was the first time I took my boat out since fishing opener. I did not tune up anything over the winter and went for a run today on the lake. Everything started out fine, but than 15 minutes in my reverse went out. When I shifted into reverse it would just start revving but the prop would not spin, so I only could go forward. After another 30 minutes my boat would not go into forward, when I shifted into forward it would do the same thing and rev but the propeller would not spin. Kind of sucked because I was on the middle of the lake and had to row into shore and ask a guy to tow me back to the launch :(
Any ideas what this could be ?Just a thought. I had a motor like yours years ago. It was selelctric shift. Perhaps the battery is low and the shift will not work. Worth a try.

How do you build an aluminum boat?
-I know you have to order the aluminum and weld it but how do you bent it to be the shape of the frame, where do you order it from, how thick of aluminum do you need, and what are the nessasarry tools? You will need clamps and the like to bend the aluminum over the frame. 1/8 inch should be all you need.

-First off trim 1/4" at end of leads, reconnect and test plug connected over a good earth.
Check the continuity of the Safety Switch Lanyard. It is normally "open". The color codes of the 2 wires are Black and Black/Yellow. These feed back into the electrical module box. The Start /Stop switch is normally "open". The color codes of the 2 wires are Black, that goes direct to ground, (to stop the engine), and the Yellow/Red that goes to the electrical module box. Check the continuity of this switch also.
With wire from mpem to coil unplugged, and still no spark, possibly coil or stator.
Hope it helps.

Good luck with it.

I have a 14ft boat what size motor should i get?
-i have a 14ft fishing/hunting boat i have a 5.5hp motor right now and i want something faster and more power what should i get 10? 15? 20? or something else? whats your opinion?on the starboard (right) inside of the transom there should be a us coast guard capacity plate that will tell you the max number of persons, weight and hp for your boat. you will be able to mount an outboard up to the max hp listed on that tag. if you boat no longer has a capacity plate then you can take a look at similar boats to figure out what the max hp should be.
if you give us more info on your boat, (manufacturer, model, year) we will be able to give you a better answer. other factors include how heavy you load the boat.
if your boat is a light weight "V" bottom boat then a 10hp to 15hp should be sufficient to get it up to planning speeds. (assuming that the boat is rated for that much hp)
for info on your crestliner go to this site

hope this helps
15hp should do it,but don't go over the rated hp on the rating plate.YOU control the speed.in my opinion it's better to have it and not need it,than to need it and not have it.
Hello,
As you have 14ft boat,15 hp motor will be great for your boat. You will get faster boating experience with 15 hp motor.
I just purchased a 1960 14' V Lone Star and I have a 18hp Evinrude FasTwin motor.

How do you interpret nautical headings?
-For example: "heading one-eight-zero"
How would you translate this into directions if you were navigating a vessel?Numerical headings are just degrees on a compass. There are 360 degrees, 0 is North, 180 is South, 90 East and 270 West. The convention is to say "zero" , but it would be ok to say "one hundred and eighty", but not in the Navy and not on my bridge. When the helmsman is given a new heading (or any order for that matter), it's also traditional to repeat the order exactly so that there is no misunderstanding. The captain says "Steer one-eight-zero"; the helmsman says "one-eight-zero aye" and then steers the course. When the vessel comes around to the ordered course (and it can take quite a while), the helmsman says: "on course one-eight-zero".
It's also important to know that compass headings are not the same as directions. The compass is always a little off because of magnetic interference, errors in the mechanism and the fact that the magnetic North pole is not ever exactly as the geographic North Pole. (It wanders around continously). Today with GPS, it's important to know if the heading is "magnetic" or "absolute". On a chart one one write a little 'm' if the recorded course heading is magnetic. For practical purposes, one usually uses the compass and is talking about magnetic headings. The GPS on board, can be set to display magnetic or absolute headings.
A ships compass is just the like measuring angles so a full circle is 360 degrees. The only bearing where you don't use the angle is due north because the angle could be 0 or 360 degrees so the command is to head 'north'. You also always give three numbers, so east is 090 (zero, nine, zero) degrees, south is 180 (one, eight, zero) degrees and west is 270 (two, seven, zero) degrees.
Hope this is clear.
You would go to/turn to 180 on the compass which happens to be South. It does not matter which way it is, its an order whether you are told steer 180 or 135 or 74 degrees you look at the compass and turn the nearest way to that course
Heading is the direction you are traveling in. "heading one-eight-zero" means you are heading directly south. It is all geared to the compass.
North = 0 degrees
East = 90 degrees
South = 180 degrees
west = 270 degrees
Well.. you have to know how to READ A COMPASS. There are 360 degees in a circls and with 0 or 360 degrees as DUE NORTH.. 180 degrees would be DUE SOUTH.. 45 degrees would be DUE EAST and 270 degrees would be DUE WEST.

If boat in rough waters what pfd is recommended?
-The best would be to use Type 1 Offshore Vest. These usually have 22.5 to 35 pounds of buoyancy built into the vest. These are also designed to roll an unconscious person to the face up position to prevent drowning. I keep Type 1's onboard my motor yacht, Type 3 on my Sport boat and Offshore Type 5 on my Express Cruiser.TYPE 1
Offshore Life Jacket
This PFD is designed for extended survival in rough, open water. It usually will turn an unconscious person face up and has over 22 pounds of buoyancy. This is the best PFD to keep you afloat in remote regions where rescue may be slow in coming.
http://www.boatingsidekicks.com/lifejack鈥?/a>
If the weather is that rough I will already be in my MUSTANG SUIT with a TYPE 1 PFD on and a safety line reaching from me to the boat.

When should you expect dangerous weather?(Boaters Ed Question)?
-a.When there is a drop in wind speed and a glassy sheen on the water
b.When there is a buildup of dark clouds and shifting winds
c.When the barometer or thermometer rises
d.When you see high, scattered cloudsI don't like any of those answers. I watch the CLOUDS and when I see MARE'S TALES then I know a change in the weather for the worst is coming and the answer to the saying of "When do you batten down the hatches" is.. WHEN YOU FIRST THINK ABOUT IT because a storm can be on top of you before you can react.. especially in the winter when you get those FAST MOVING COLD FRONTS
A storm front will not always generate a falling Barometer contrary to what the land locked types will have you believe. I would say B) is the closest thing to a proper answer

Looking for Oil Ship Jobs, companies?
-I'm 18, graduated high school and recently a friend of mine mentioned I should look into Oil Ships. I live in PEI, Canada. My friend said that I should look for companies that work all around the world, because that is something that I want to do, is travel.
Any suggestions in companies that are hiring? I heard there was a good one in newfoundland that was 5 weeks on and then 5 weeks off.
Also, could anyone give me more information about the type of work you would do, how are your days split into? And how much is the average pay for these jobs?
Thanks!

Does the displacement of a ship increase over time and if so why?
-I was reading an article about the royal navies new type 45 destroyers, and the displacement of the ship was described as being "8900 tons (at start of life)". When reading a description of a ship the displacement of a ship is often referred to as the displacement which the ship has at the beginning of its life. Does this mean that the weight of something constructed from metal or particular types of metal increases over time by a certain extent? And if this is the case does this only happen to ships, perhaps because of the way in which salt water reactes to the ships hull or something like that, or does this also happen to airplanes, cars etc.Displacement can increase internally and externally.
Internal reasons: Cargo, People, updated equipment, And water leakage into the ship..
External reasons: Barnacles, other sea creatures, Damage repairs, and coats of re-painting.
It means that ships are usually added to, refitted, and otherwise modified on a more or less continual basis, and that such modifications have probably changed the original displacement.

What is the difference between a mercruiser 357 mag 4v alpha and mercruiser 357 4v bravo?
-From what I have seen, Mercruiser makes two models of the 357 mag. The alpha, rated at 275hp and the bravo rated at 325hp. Other than the hp and water pump for the bravo, whats the difference that makes the power?I'm pretty sure that the engines are the same, but the outdrive (sterndrives) are different. I don't know why one has more hp, must have something to do witht he gear ratio and one may be rated for 2 props or higher rpms.
Alpha one has one prop. Bravo has two counter rotating props.
The Alpha drive has one prop and the bravo has two counter rotating props.

How much can I get for a low hours 2002 Mercury 125 outboard with possible seized cylinder?
-The engine is clean and very powerful but might have sucked in a piece of garbage and overheated it. Assuming the engine needs a new powerhead worst case, what do you think it's worth to someone who wants to rebuild it? You will have a new engine once you do. Again, the engine is 2002 and super super clean.
Thanks. Gonna throw it on ebay just wondering!Just the numbers:
Used value of your outboard, IN GOOD WORKING ORDER - $2200 to 2500.
Remanufactured powerhead - $2000 to 2200.
Cost of parts to rebuild, including machining - $1000 - 1200. (no labour).
If you part the engine out: (approx value of used parts):
Gearcase - $600 - 750.
Trim system - $400 - 500.
Ignition components (CDM modules, stator, trigger, flywheel) $250 - 500.
Driveshaft housing including clamp bracket - $750
Starter components - $200
Fuel and oil injection components - $250 -500.
Please draw your own conclusions from this info.
not much.
its apperently not running, has serious problems, and far all the shopper knows, is far, far worse then you say it is (always a safe assumption to make).
if you fix it 1st, you should be able to recover parts plus a little profit.
but right now, you'd be best off selling it for parts. lots of people manage to bust their lower unit......
Not a whole lot. Even if it's in perfect shape other than that, it would cost a couple thousand dollars to repair it. You might be better off parting it out than selling it as is seized up.

-If heard of people from asia and africa traveling as far west as the Uk and canada in badly made wooden boats. How do they survive such a long journey on a badly built wooden vessel?dedication or desperation
What do the two numbers on a boat prop mean?
-The numbers are the prop diameter and then the Pitch angle. The last number means how much forward movement in a full 360 degree rotation of the prop. It doesn't actually mean that's the full amount of forward movement you'll get.diameter of the prop and the pitch (angle) of the individual blades . You will also get into "cup"...Double cup/triple cup, this is like a little flip up at the back edge of the blade that gives a little extra "kick" as the prop turns
S&w mp40. I need sone advise ?
-I just bought a s&w mp 40 for 400 dollars. Tho is the first gun I ever bought. I wanted to know if I got a good deal. It I brand new come with box and the 2 crips plus the one on it 3 mags and it has the night thing you aim with. I'm new to pistols I have shot rifles before. I'm going to take classes on pistols but all I really want to know is that a good deal and is it a good gun. Btw it does no have a safety. Is that normal? If it is "brand new" as you say then i say you got a hell of a deal. New from S&W, depending on what style of MP40 and features, they retail for $570-$800. When i bought my Springfield XD9 it came with two extra 10rd and two extra 16rd magazines and i paid $500, also a great deal. Take it out to a range and run a hundred or so rounds through it and if you don't have any mechanical issues with the gun then i would say you got a good deal.1st off, this is boats and boating.
there is almost certainly a guns area, possibly in sporting.
smith and wesson is one of the leading brands in firearms.
$400 with all that sounds like a BARGAIN and then some. it sounds almost too good to be true..... is this gun NEW and from a licensed seller?
i've heard of and seen prices like that, on the streets. if it isnt NEW and from a licensed dealer, its always best to assume it has a history, by having possession of it you could be risking a LONG stay in jail.
if you bought it on the streets, wipe it CLEAN and get rid of it. return it and get your money back, if you can, or toss it in a lake or somewhere else it will never be found (by a child possibly).
It is a good deal if it is in good shape. In my area I can get one new for 476 bucks plus tax. M&P's usually do not have thumb safeties but there are models with them.
That is a lot of pistol for a beginner. I have a S&W .38 +P and it kicks like a mule.. just like any handgun with a short barrel.. All I can say is.. get some training and HANG ON TO THAT BEAST when you fire it.. and the first few times you fire it.. just have one shell in it. Years ago I bought a 1911 and had never fired a .45 handgun. The FIRST shot when where I wnated it to go.. but the gun popped up because I wasn't prepared for that much of a recoil and the SECOND shot went off just as the pistor got next to my right ear.. BAM..BAM.. just about that fast.. and I couldn't hear out of that ear for a few days.

How long would it take to learn to sail to europe?
-i want to get a large sailboat, and sail to europe one day. i know nothing about what i need, the size of the ship, the number of people, supplies, etc. and i also know nothing about sailing, or the ocean... the only thing i know is the points of sail. what all would i need, and how would i learn to do it all?
thank you so much for any help!the length of time needed to gain enough sailing knowledge and experience depends on you and what other experiences you already have. as far as the number of crew needed, one or more. there are many seaworthy sailboats (ocean proven) from 20' on up.
my suggestion is to check out the ASA sailing school courses. upon completion of each level you will receive certification. upon completion of the advanced courses you will be qualified to bareboat charter sailboats.

It really is not that hard to to you just need to be prepared and ready for anything. 95 percent of the time it will not be bad as long as you pick your whether windows. See if you can help crew for charters which will help you learn more also. You can sail there by yourself but it would make it easier if you got a crew mate or partner. You could comfortably cross in a 35 to 45 ft boat by yourself or with one or two other friends. Check out boats on yachtworld.com and put in an advanced search of what you want. Good Luck

in these modern times there is no need to sail, boats have engines now or you could fly
